Oakhurst ES Principal Recognized As Fort Worth Outstanding Child Advocate
Guadalupe Cortez, principal at Fort Worth ISD’s Oakhurst Elementary School, is the Children at Risk organization’s Outstanding Child Advocate for the Fort Worth area.
The nonprofit recently hosted its Texas Academy Awards of Child Advocacy via Facebook where it recognized the state’s Healthcare Heroes and Outstanding Childcare Advocates. View the broadcast at www.facebook.com/childrenatrisk.
Ms. Cortez was one of four nominees in the running for the Fort Worth Outstanding Child Advocate.
“You work so hard everyday to make sure the children at Oakhurst Elementary have the best educational opportunities and experience. You are making a difference for the children at Oakhurst,” said Devika Kornba, Children At Risk board president, of Ms. Cortez during the October 1 virtual award announcement.
Nominated by an unknown community leader, the nomination came as a complete surprise, Ms. Cortez said. It’s her life’s work to advocate for students and their families daily, she said, and “ensuring that all students receive a quality education by providing equitable experiences to our students.” Ms. Cortez said she’s thankful for the individual who nominated her, the Oakhurst Elementary school staff and parents for their support, Children At Risk and the Texas Academy for Child Advocacy.
“To be recognized for my contributions to something I am extremely passionate about by individuals outside of my school’s walls is such an honor,” she said. “I am deeply humbled to have been selected by the Children At Risk as the Fort Worth Outstanding Child Advocate. Receiving this award has been a highlight of my career. I will continue to serve as a catalyst for change to improve the quality of life for children within our schools and community. “
A Fort Worth native and Polytechnic High School alumna, Ms. Cortez joined the District as an educator in 1997. In that time she’s served as a tutor, bilingual teacher’s assistant, teacher, literacy and math coach and administrator. She’s worked at what is now Rufino Mendoza Elementary School, Polytechnic High School, Sam Rosen Elementary, W.J. Turner and Oakhurst elementary schools. She’s led Oakhurst Elementary since 2011.
