The Western Hills football program had two young men sign to play college football this year. Jude Collins signed with Texas A&M Commerce and Ashon Cooper signed with Doane University. Congratulations to these young men as they continue their academic and athletic career at the next level.

    Big picture

The Western Hills football team made the playoffs for the first time since 2010. The senior group had a goal to play in the post season and did a great job of reaching that goal. The team will bring back 9 offensive starters and 7 defensive starters.

The mighty cougars closed out their 2020 season with a dominating 40-0 victory over the South Hills Scorpions. The cougars were in control of the game from start to finish.

Deshaun Davis connected with Skylar Powell for two of the scoring drives. Eric Griffin, D'Anton Davis, and Holdin Hernandez each contributed with a rushing touchdown a piece. The defense recorded their first shut out of the year with Camren Brown's 2 interceptions and Iasiah Hampton adding to the scoring with a pick 6. The Junior Varsity team finished the season 3-5 overall and 2-2 in district play. Thank you for support throughout the season.

  • Varsity - First in Ten

Posted by Coach Moilan on 10/16/2020

For the first time in ten years, the Cougar Football team is headed to the playoffs!

For those of you that have been around WHHS for the years that my staff has been at Western Hills, you know it’s been a long haul!  We appreciate all the support and help for our boys over the years!

Last night, the boys earned their trip into the playoffs with a 27-0 win over Eastern Hills.  The defense played lights out and earned the shut out. Caleb Clark once again led the team in tackles. Tahj Wade had a great game on the defensive line and Tony Pascall and Deion Williams secured the corner spot and completely shut down the passing game. Our defensive coaching staff did a great job!

On the offensive side, we started a bit slow, but finally got things going when QB Keyon Butler connected on a 48 yard touchdown pass to Tre Brewster. Jason Green added two other touchdowns and Keyon also scored on a 1 yard QB sneak. The offensive coaches did a great job of fighting through the slow start and keeping the boys going.

Jude Collins continued to impress. He knocked in three extra points and more importantly had two huge touchbacks. We are so happy that his dad has had the chance to coach him on the gridiron his senior season and has done a great job of giving us an extra edge with a fantastic kicking game.

Up next? Next Friday, we play at Kennedale. We then have Dunbar and Carter Riverside to finish out the regular season. We do not have those dates, times, or location as of yet.

The mighty Cougars defeated the Carter Riverside Eagles 20 to 14 in a hard fought victory here at home yesterday. Carter Riverside scored first taking a 6 to 0 lead which did not last long because Skylar Powell took the following kick off return to the house. After a failed two point conversion the score remained tied.

Carter Riverside took the lead again - 14 to 6. Once again the Cougars answered putting together a nice drive cutting the lead to 14 to 12 when Deshaun Davis connected with Skylar Powell for a 20 yard touchdown pass. The Cougar defense stepped up with some outstanding play causing a safety bringing the score to a 14 to 14 tie going into halftime.

Throughout the second half the Cougar defense continued to get key stops with outstanding play by Gavyn Harris, D'Mareay Hornsby, Eric Griffin, CamRen Brown, Daniel Yescas, and Luciano Martinez. With under 4 minutes left in the game Deshaun Davis connected with Camden Hawkins for a 35 yard touchdown pass giving the Cougars a 20 to 14 lead. The Carter Riverside Eagles moved the ball to our 40 yard line but once again the Cougar defense tighten up and gave the ball back to our offense with a minute left in the game.

This was a great team win for these young men bringing our record to 2 - 3 overall.

  • WHHS vs. Castleberry

Posted by Coach Moilan on 9/26/2020

You missed a great game Friday night! And, Man, what a game it was!  We jumped out to an early 22-6 lead, but Castleberry eventually tied it up and took the lead.  With 1:39 left in the fourth, we turned the ball over on downs and things did not look good.  On the castleberry first down play, senior LB Deion Williams stripped the ball away from the castleberry running back and gave us new life.   Two great runs by sophomore QB Keyon Butler, a huge catch and run on a quick hitch to Senior WR Trey Brewster set us up at the about the 20 yard line.   Senior WR Ashon Cooper then caught a quick out, split two defenders and weaved his way into the endzone with 17 seconds left in the game and a one point lead.   The Castleberry kickoff returner had a nice return and was tackled by Senior Jude Collins.  The defensive line got a huge rush on the last play of the game and the game ended with a sack of the QB. Final score WHHS - 35 CHS - 34.

I could not be more proud of the kids and coaches.  They fought through some adversity and won a tough district game to go 2-0 in districts.

Junior LB Caleb Clark had a huge game on defense finishing with 17 tackles. The defense stepped up when they needed to and got some key stops.

Our offensive line continues to get better each week.   Center RJ Moilan, Guards Jacorie Williams and Angel Ortiz, tackles Kishaun Brookins and Noah Sanchez, and TE Michael Young did a great job of leading us to over 250 yards rushing.   Nick Johnson and Janaii Thompson came into the game in our "jumbo" set and gave us a big group of guys to run behind.

Junior Running back Jason Green was a workhorse!   He had 30 carries for 152 yards and 4 TD's

Your Junior Varsity Western Hills Cougars won their first game last night vs the Castleberry Lions, 36-18.

The Cougars started scoring early with a long run by Deshun Jones.  Later on, in the same quarter Skyler Powell caught a pass in the back of the endzone to bring the score 14-0.  Towards the end of the Second Quarter Deshun Jones scored again cementing a solid lead for the Cougars as they worked their way to a 20-6 lead going into the second half.

The third quarter tested the Cougars as Castle berry held onto the ball for 9 minutes and brought the score close 20-18.  The fourth quarter marked the turning point as the Cougars put their foot in the ground and finished strong.

They were led with two interceptions by Demariah Arnsby and Camden Hawkins, and a fumble recovery by Eric Griffin.  The Cougars finished strong with scores by Demarian Hornesby and D’anton Davis.
