Nurses Corner
Beginning of Year Information
Throughout the beginning months of the new school year the school nurse will be conducting state mandated screenings for vision, hearing, acanthosis nigricans*, and spinal screening.
- All kindergarten, 1st, 3rd, 5th, and 7th graders will be screened for vision, hearing, and acanthosis nigricans
- 5th and 7th grade girls will complete spinal screening
- 8th grade boys will complete spinal screening
*Acanthosis Nigricans screening is a visual exam that only requires seconds to complete. It is to detect a black-brown velvety marker that usually appears on the back of the neck. The marker is caused by too much insulin in the blood. It is
a pre-diabetic condition and serves as an indicator of risk for Type 2 diabetes and other chronic health problems.
Clothing Update:
Thank you for all the clothing donations this year and last! We have a good range of sizes for both boys and girls. At this time, we do not need further donations since our space is limited.
Medication at school:
Per FWISD policy, students are not allowed to have any medication, either prescription or over-the-counter on their person while in school. If your student requires medication (prescribed or over-the-counter), we must have a health care practitioner (physician, NP, or PA) order on file in the nurse’s office. Medication must be kept in the nurse’s office in a locked cabinet and administered by the nurse or nurse delegated personnel per the medication order.
Immunizations:
Please ensure your student is up-to-date with their state's required immunizations. Acceptable evidence of vaccination should be submitted to me prior to September 30, 2023. Failure to complete the required vaccinations may result in exclusion from campus. For more information, contact your campus and/or visit: https://www.fwisd.org/site/default.aspx?PageID=14633
Visit to School Nurse email notices:
For any minor illness or injury I will be sending an email notice to parents. If the injury or illness constitutes more attention a phone call will be made by the nurse or nurse delegated personnel. If your email address has changed please contact me so I may update my contact list.
Have a wonderful, safe, and healthy weekend.
