Abby Moilan - State Bound
Posted by Coach Rock on 3/4/2024Thursday night was a very long but exciting night. This year was the first year of an unequipped weight class in powerlifting. This means they do not get to use squat suits or bench shirts, which can add 200-300 pounds to their overall total. At the same time, you are competing against 1a, 2a, 3a, 4a, 5a and 6a competitors, who are not at the same meet as you are. We finally got the results last night at 9 pm and found that Abby is the number one lifter in her weight class and WILL be competing in the State Championship in Frisco next Thursday.
Abby had a great meet at the Regional Meet where she squatted 320, benched 135 and had a deadlift of 345 for an 800 total. Every lift Abby did was a regional record and a new personal record for all lifts with lots of room to go. We are looking forward to competing at the Comerica Center next week.

Regional Meet
Posted by Coach Rock on 3/4/2024Saturday morning we left school at 5:30am to head to Decatur to represent Fort Worth at the boys 4A regional meet. Kevin Cruz represented in the 275 weight Class, Josh Raga in the 220 and Justin Hurst in the 123. All the boys made weight by 7:30 and waited for the meet to begin.
Kevin Cruz started us out with a 585 Squat, then kept going with a 360 bench and a 495 deadlift. Kevin finished third overall, missing a state trip by 30 pounds.
Josh Raga finished 7th with a 485 squat, a 285 bench, and a 450 deadlift with a season high 1220 deadlift.
Justin finished 9th in a VERY competitive 123 weight class where he squatted 260, benched 140 and had a deadlift of 260.
The boys had a great season, and I am very proud of them. I had no seniors on the team this year and 18 students competed. If any students want to lift, the weight room is open after school every day.

Stephenville Meet
Posted by Coach Rock on 2/2/2024The Western Hills Powerlifting Team had their second meet this week in Stephenville. The boys and girls competed against 12 other teams and 220 other lifters. The Cougars met with a lot of success and new personal records.
On the girls' side, Abby Moilan competed unequipped and took 1st place with a 320lb Squat, 115 Bench and 330 Deadlift. This makes Abby the current #1 lifter in the unequipped class.
On the other side, the boys dominated their weight class. Kevin Cruz competed in the 275 Weight Class and finished 2nd with a 1405 total (575 Squat, 375 Bench and 455 Deadlift). Josh Raga competed in the 220 weight and finished 2nd with a 1275 total (510 Squat, 315 Bench, 450 Deadlift). Finally, Eric Smith competed in the 165 weight class and while he did not medal, I am proud of him as he has new personal records in lifts with 805 total (275 squat, 220 Bench and 310 Deadlift).
We are unbelievably proud of the lifters who showed that we are here to compete. The Cougars will be going to Eastern Hills to compete next week on Wednesday, February 7th.

Regionals
Posted by Coach Rock on 2/27/2023The powerlifting season sadly came to an end this past Saturday.
Abby Moilan took 4th place at the Regional meet (second year in a row to get a medal) at the regional meet. She had a good squat of 285, benched 165 and a deadlift of 315. Abby had a fantastic year along with all the girls and was a few lifts away from making it to the state competition. Our goal next year is that every first lift is a STATE lift.
The girls had a great year going to four meets and the regional meet. Eva Almanderez, Alyana Cortez, Brianna Moreno, and Abby Moilan are all returning next year and looking to dominate the top spots in their weight classes.
On the boys'side, Alexis Yakobo (114), O'Rylyn Crockett (132) and RJ Moilan (308) were all first alternates for regionals this year (meaning they are number 13). Everyone that participated in boys powerlifting was a first year lifter and only looking forward to getting stronger and better next year.
While the Texas High School season is over, lifting never ends. The weight room is open every day and any student (and staff) can participate. A few of the kids are interested in USPLA, which is the national level lifting and they are ranked by age group and weight class. If you know any students interested in lifting or if YOU may be interested, come lift after school. If you are interested in being an adult lifter (or have students who want to lift) come find me in room 101 or after school.

Posted by Coach Rock on 2/23/2023Last night, your Cougar boys went to Keller ISD-Fossil Ridge High School for the last qualifier of the year. It was a highly competitive meet with 7 teams present and over 80 young men competing. All of the guys that went were freshmen and all medaled (top 5).
Alexis Yakobo competed in the 114 weight class and took 1st place with a total of 520 lbs (he only weights 101), O'Rylyn Crockett took 2nd place in the 132 Weight Class with a 710 total, Josh Raja competed in the 181 weight class which had 13 boys in it and took 4th place with a 990 total and Patrick Brought took 5th place in the 198 weight class with a 740 total.

Keller Central Meet
Posted by Coach Rock on 2/21/2023This past Friday, Abby Moilan went to the final qualifier of the year at Keller Central. Abby took first in her weight class with an 825 total (Squatted 335, Benched 175, Deadlift 315). She also set a new personal record for her bench. Abby is currently third in the region and will compete this Saturday at Kennedale in the girls'regional meet.
It has been a successful season overall for the girls.
Eva Almanderez competed and finished the season 14th overall in her weight class at the region level with a 570 total. Eva has really grown as a lifter and her numbers continue to climb.
Alyana Cortez had the most improvement of all the athletes as she started the year only able to squat 95lbs and finished with a big squat of 215lbs. Alyana will compete next year in her senior year.
Ava Maples started lifting, but did not compete. Her numbers were going up, but her schedule did not allow her to attend the meets.
Briana Moreno is lifting, but a mild injury at the beginning of the year sidelined her and she was only able to cheer on her teammates. However, she was at EVERY single meet this year and boosted everyone's morale.
If any girls are interested in lifting, please see Coach Rock.
Powerlifting is year round and we will have some USPLA meets this summer. (YES, THERE IS AN ADULT GROUP IF ANYONE IS INTERESTED!).
