Welcome to Dyslexia Services
-
FWISD Dyslexia Services follow guidelines set by Texas Education Agency to identify and provide services for students with dyslexia. Qualified personnel follow procedures for dyslexia assessment and identification. Program monitoring and school support is available. Fort Worth ISD's Dyslexia Services staff offer training for teachers who facilitate specialized programs designed to provide intensive instruction for students identified with dyslexia. The focus of instruction for dyslexia programs involves teaching procedures that students internalize and are able to retrieve when coping with tasks related to reading, spelling, and writing.
Dyslexia Defined
Dyslexia is a specific learning disability that is neurological in origin. It is characterized by difficulties with accurate and/or fluent word recognition and by poor spelling and decoding abilities.
These difficulties typically result from a deficit in the phonological component of language that is often unexpected in relation to other cognitive abilities and the provision of effective classroom instruction.
Secondary consequences may include problems in reading comprehension and reduced reading experience that can impede growth of vocabulary and background knowledge.Dyslexia Handbook - 2024 Update
